All India Marine Engineer Selection & Recruitment 2023.

Marine engineering includes the engineering of boats, ships, oil rigs and any other marine vessels. It includes but is not limited to power and propulsion plants, machinery, piping, automation and control systems for marine vehicles of any kind. Those interested in pursuing a career in marine engineering has to undergo training in institute offering  BE/B-TECH MARINE ENGINEERING or Graduate Marine Engineering(GME)[GME Course is for Graduates those who completed BE Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture].This enables the cadets to become engineers on board the vessels.After completing the course the cadet has to serve six months on board and then the cadets are eligible for class IV Engineer certificate of competency.Once the cadet clears the class IV certificate of competency cadet becomes fourth engineer and further clearing the exams after required sea service they can grow upon the level of chief engineer. Marine Engineering is a job oriented course. B.E./B.Tech.Marine engineering programs are more valuable than compared to nautical science programs. While selecting Marine Engineering College, check whether they are approved by the Director General of Shipping or not. There is good scope present in this sector. One will for sure be able to scale up the career ladder with time.

  1. At present Ph.D. Programme is being conducted at IMU Visakhapatnam Campus.

Marine Engineering Entrance Exam:

All admissions to the various UG and PG programmes of the IMU and its Affiliated Institutes will be through All-India Common Entrance Tests (IMU-CET) conducted every year, usually in the month of May/Jan.Qualifing in IMU-CET is mandatory for getting admission in IMU Campuses or IMU affiliated institutes.

IMU-CET is a Computer based CET exam consisting of 200 Multiple choice type questions. Exam duration is of 3 hours.

IMU-CET Exam pattern/Question paper of UG programme consists of

  • English : 40 questions
  • General Aptitude : 40 questions
  • Mathematics  : 50 questions
  • Physics : 50 questions
  • Chemistry : 20 questions

Note: There is no negative marking for wrong answers.

MARINE ENGINEERING APPLICATION FORM-2023.

Candidates those who want to pursue Marine Engineering have to clear the common entrance test conducted by IMU.

The candidates has to apply online for appearing for the Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET 2023)

Application Fee for applying online for CET is Rs.1000 for General candidates and Rs.700 for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates. Application Fee has to be paid online only.

Application Form is released in the month of April. IMU-CET exam is conducted in the month of May/June.

All the CETs are scheduled to be held simultaneously at 34 cities (Test Centres) spread across the country.

 Marine Engineering Admission:

The following criteria have to be met in order to be eligible for admission into the B.Tech. Marine Engineering programme.

Marine Engineering Eligibility Criteria:

Educational qualifications:

A pass in Plus-two (12th Standard) or its equivalent, with minimum 60% aggregate in Maths, Physics and Chemistry group and at least 50% marks in English in both 10th and 12th .

Age limit:

Maximum age limit is 25 years at the time of commencement of course.

Medical standards:

Should be physically fit for sea and should meet the medical standards laid by the Director General of shipping.

Eyesight/Vision:

Use of corrective lenses for eyesight is permitted but the maximum permissible limits, at entry, are 6/12 in each eye or 6/9 in better eye and 6/18 in other eye for distant unaided vision. Color blindness is not permitted.

There is also a course named GME (Graduate Marine Engineering).This is a gateway course for a mechanical student to enter into Merchant Navy.

GME Course Eligibility.

A Candidate should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical & Automation Engineering after attending a course of 4 years duration from an UGC recognized University and or approved by AICTE, with a minimum marks of 50% in the final year; and a minimum 50% marks in English language at the 10th or 12th standard or in Degree Examination.

GME Course Duration:

GME Course is a one year course divided into 2 semesters.

GME COURSE FEES:

GME Course fees vary from Institute to Institute. GME course fees lies between 3lakhs - 5 lakhs per year.

Marine Engineering Salary:  500$ - 10000$ (30,000-6,00,000 INR) per month.

Once the candidate completes BE/B-TECH MARINE ENGINEERING or GME  gets appointed on vessel as engine cadet and receives a stipend of  500$(30,000INR).After completing six months as Engine cadet  the candidate is eligible for class IV certificate of competency,once cleared class IV certificate of competency cadet gets  promoted to fourth engineer and receives a minimum pay of 2000$(1,20,000INR).On further clearing the exams after required sea service the candidate can grow upto the level of chief engineer.Minimum salary of chief engineer is around 7000$-10000$(4 lac-6 lac). Salary of a MARINE ENGINEER lies between 500$-10000$ Per month.

How To Join Merchant Navy 2023

Work of seafarers on ships can be categorized into 3 basic departments:
1.Deck Officers                      2.Engineering Officers                    3.Ratings 

1.Deck Officers -The officers from this branch primarily look after the ships navigation, loading/unloading of cargo and the general maintenance and administration of the ship.In addition, they also looks after electronic navigation aids such as radar, depth measuring devices, long range navigation equipment and global positioning system etc. The officer joins in the rank of 3rd officer and is subsequently promoted to the rank of 2nd officer, Chief Officer and finally the Master of the ship.

2.Engineering Officers -These are the officer who is qualified in Marine Engineering. They join as 4th Engineer and step by step, get promoted to 3rd, 2nd and Chief Engineer, subject to their passing the competency exams and performance on board the ship. The Engineering department in addition to looking after the main engines, are also responsible for associated equipment like power generation equipment, cargo pumps and air - conditioning etc.

 3.Ratings - There are three kinds of ratings Deck,Engine room and catering.Deck rating is responsible for cargo handling, mooring/ unmooring and general maintenance of the ship. Similarly the engine room ratings assist the engineering officers in maintenance and operation of engines and associated equipment. The catering crew consists of Steward/Cooks and as the name suggests, they look after the catering and the house keeping of officers cabin.
